Throughout Christy’s life, the parable of the house built on the sand in Matthew 7:24–27 has brought a vivid and tumultuous image to mind each time she heard it. After the story was read at church one Sunday, she sat down at her piano and roughed out the driving melody of the chorus that had been brewing in her imagination for years. The words and pulsating rhythm of the chorus transport us into the midst of the lesson this parable holds—we do not need to be tossed in the storm. And we won’t be when our faith is built on the foundation of Jesus Christ: The Solid Rock.
This song can be used in a contemporary worship setting, for Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and other youth or children's gatherings. It's fun and upbeat, and is an excellent tool for teaching one of Jesus' most well-loved parables.
Verse 1
Jesus told a story 'bout a faithful man,
Who built his house upon a stone.
But all his friends and neighbors built their homes in sand,
On the shifting shore below.
Verse 2
When the wind began to blow in from the sea,
The homes on sand were tossed around.
But this wise man's foundation held his home secure,
For it was built on solid ground.
Chorus
When the thunder rolled, and the strong winds blew,
And the rain came down, and the great force grew,
And the thrashing storms battered all around,
And when a bolt of lightning struck the trembling ground,
Well, the house still stood.
Verse 3
So I built my foundation on the Solid Rock,
Jesus Christ, my risen Lord.
He's been my sure salvation, ever-present help,
My refuge in uncertain storms.
Chorus
Verse 4
So build your life on Jesus Christ's unfailing love.
He wants to be your dwelling place.
And, when you put your life in His protecting hands,
When strong winds blow you, too, can say:
